Glaucoma, also referred to as "the sneak thief of
sight," is an increasingly common disorder where the vision is
gradually lost, often at first without symptoms, over time.
While all of the physicians of Richmond Eye Associates diagnose
and treat glaucoma, Harold A. Bernstein, M.D.
is a Glaucoma Specialist.
|
Diagnosing
and treating glaucoma requires state-of-the-art diagnostic
equipment, up to date knowledge of techniques to medically
control the disease, and having the option to utilize effective
surgical procedures when appropriate. |
 |
Richmond
Eye Associates offers all of these, as well as advanced surgical
procedures performed only by glaucoma specialists for difficult
cases of glaucoma. We also have in-office lasers that
can be used for some types of glaucoma, eliminating the need to
travel to a separate surgical facility.

Cataract is a common eye condition where the natural
lens of the eye becomes progressively cloudy, causing visual
symptoms. These can include blurred reading or distance vision,
glare symptoms, and night vision problems. While cataract
surgery is performed by most ophthalmologists, the Cataract /
Implant Specialists at Richmond Eye Associates use
state-of-the-art techniques and surgical facilities to perform
cataract surgery. These techniques lead an improved speed of
recovery from the surgery with less interference with the
lifestyle of the patient.
|
Some new
advances in cataract surgery include the use of more specialized
lens implants that can help to correct pre-existing astigmatism,
and lens implants that can help to restore near vision as well
as distance vision after surgery. With cataract surgery
performed by Richmond Eye Associates not only is the cataract
removed, but the need for glasses after surgery may be reduced
as well. |
 |
The
Cataract / Implant Specialists of Richmond Eye Associates use
"phacoemulsification" as their primary technique to
remove cataract. This technique uses ultrasound to
dissolve the cataract through a tiny opening in the eye, rather
than an opening requiring many sutures to close. In some
cases, this surgery can be done with only eye drop anesthesia.
The physicians of Richmond Eye Associates perform Cataract /
Implant procedures at various locations around the Richmond
area, including Stony Point Surgery Center, Hanover Outpatient
Surgery Center, and Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical
Center. |

The cornea is a clear dome of tissue over the colored
iris of the eye. Not only is this a clear window through which
we see, but it is also a major contributor to the focusing of
the eye. About 75% of the focusing of the eye is achieved just
by the curvature of the cornea. External disease refers to
problems relating to the ocular surface, such as the
conjunctiva, the eyelid margins and inside surface of the
eyelids, and the cornea.
|
Malcolm Magovern, M.D.
is a specialist in Corneal and External
Disease. He specializes in treating medical and surgical
conditions affecting the cornea and ocular surface, including
infections, dry eye, corneal scarring, and abnormal shapes of
the cornea requiring corneal transplant. |
 |
Surgically,
Dr. Magovern performs penetrating keratoplasty (corneal
transplant), lamellar keratoplasty (a partial thickness
transplant), reconstruction procedures of the surface of the
eye, and limbal stem-cell transplant (a new procedure to help
restore the normal surface of the eye).

Contact lenses provide an alternative to glasses to
correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness,
farsightedness, astigmatism, and the need for reading glasses.
Contact lens technology continues to improve, and newer lenses
are available which are often more comfortable to wear, are
safer, and may provide clearer vision.
However, contact lens use is not without risk, and it
is important to be appropriately fitted for the lenses, with
detailed instruction on how to handle and care for the lenses.
|
Donald
Lumpkin, O.D.
is an optometrist of Richmond Eye Associates who specializes in
the fitting and care of contact lenses. He performs
fittings for individuals of all ages, from teenage to older
adults. Dr. Lumpkin uses a wide variety of contact lenses
to provide correction for even more challenging cases, such as
high levels of astigmatism and the need for bifocal contact
lenses. |
 |
Dr.
Lumpkin accepts many vision plans and insurances, and he see
patients at all of the Richmond Eye Assoicates offices,
including Innsbrook, Midlothian, and Mechanicsville.
