Research and Community Involvement

The Doctors and Staff of Richmond Eye Associates are actively
involved in community events and service including:
-
Fall 2007 -
D. Alan Chandler, MD began providing free eye examinations to
underprivileged individuals at the Aylett, VA Saint David's Clinic
on a monthly basis.

Fall 2006 -
Richmond Eye Associates was involved in a
Health Fair at the Cedarfield Retirement Community in September,
2006. Also, Donald Lumpkin, O.D. will be involved in the VDOT
Heath Fair in September, 2006.

May, 2006 -
Barry
Roper, M.D.
presented Living with Lupus: Keeping Good Health in Sight to
members of the Lupus Foundation of Virginia at Henrico Doctors
Hospital. Dr. Roper is a member of their Physician Advisory Panel.

Spring, 2006 -
Richmond Eye Associates participated in the SuperValu
Health Fair held at the SuperValu Distribution Center in
Mechanicsville. D. Alan Chandler, M.D., and a Richmond Eye
Associates ophthalmic technician and
optician attended the fair, which was held around mid-day on a
Wednesday. Vision screenings and eye pressure measurements
were offered free of charge, and information was available regarding
a variety of eye disorders. The optician demonstrated new
styles in eyewear, and a raffle for two pairs of quality sunglasses
was held for attendees of the fair.

Spring, 2006 -
An ophthalmic technician of Richmond Eye Associates
participated in a Job Fair at a local Hanover Elementary School.
During the morning, she discussed her job as an ophthalmic
technician class by class to the entire fifth grade of the school.
She also discussed eye health and safety issues with the children.

March 2006 -
David Bowman, M.D. and a
Richmond Eye Assoicates ophthalmic technician participated in
the Willow Lawn Diabetes Health fair. Richmond Eye Associates had a
booth where Dr. Bowman discussed diabetic eye disease, encouraged
regular examinations, and answered other non-diabetic eye health
questions as well.

September 2005 -
David Bowman, M.D. and Donald Lumpkin, O.D.
participated in the VDOT Health Fair in September, 2005. This
included free vision screening and eye pressure measurements for
VDOT employees.

March 2005 -
Harold Bernstein, M.D. participated in a live
interview with Channel 8, WRIC, concerning glaucoma.

2005 - Harold Bernstein, M.D.
spoke at the Virginia Society of
Ophthalmic Technicians Midyear Symposium on Glaucoma.

February
2005 - David Bowman, M.D. participated in the
St. Francis Hospital Youth Health Fair. Richmond Eye
Associates had a booth where general eye health issues were
discussed.

January
2005 - David Bowman,
M.D. participated in the Robious Fitness Center Health Fair. General
eye health issues were discussed.

November
2004 - David Bowman,
M.D. gave a talk to other physicians at the Virginia Heart Institute
Noon Lecture Series entitled “Ocular Manifestations of
Cardiovascular Disease”.

September 2004 -
Harold Bernstein, M.D.
participated in a glaucoma screening at
the Cedarfield Retirement Community.

Ongoing Community
Service
-
The doctors of Richmond
Eye Associates participate in the national
EyeCare America programs:
Seniors EyeCare Program - SEP (formerly the National Eye Care
Project®, and the Glaucoma EyeCare Program - GEP.
Participation in these programs provide eye care at no out of pocket
cost to the patient.

Bryan M. Brooks, MD
provided medical and surgical eye care to underprivileged and
uninsured
individuals on a weekly basis at the Crossover Ministries Eye Clinic
in Richmond, VA. During a one year period, Dr. Brooks
performed over 50 surgical eye procedures on these uninsured
patients. This not only improved their quality of life, but in
many instances allowed them to get back in the workforce.

in the Fall of 2007.
Research Projects
-
Harold Bernstein,
M.D. has participated in research projects with ophthalmic
residents at the Medical College of Virginia. One project
concerned laser peripheral iridotomies for glaucoma, and another
project involved Viscoelastics and intraocular pressure. The
second project won the MCV-wide resident research presentation
for 2006.
