D. Alan Chandler, M.D.
Dr. Chandler is a Board Certified ophthalmologist (American Board of Ophthalmology) specializing in small incision cataract extraction with lens implant, medical and surgical management of glaucoma, and the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic eye disease. He performs comprehensive eye examinations both of a routine nature, as well as for diagnosing and treating eye disease. Dr. Chandler has office hours five days a week at the Mechanicsville office location.
Dr. Chandler is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Medical Association, the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the Richmond Academy of Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an active staff member of Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, and performs surgery at the Ambulatory Surgery Center at Memorial Regional.
Dr. Chandler implants advanced technology lens implants such as the multifocal AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® intraocular lens implant. These new lens implants give the potential for the uncorrected vision after cataract surgery to be excellent for both near and distance vision. Dr. Chandler also uses the Alcon toric intraocular lens implant to help correct astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery, and well as performs limbal relaxing incisions to reduce astigmatism. Dr. Chandler has been practicing in the Richmond, VA area since 1992, and has been with Richmond Eye Associates since 1998. He has provided medical and surgical ophthalmic care to underprivileged individuals through the St. David’s Clinic in Aylett, Virginia, and through the Access Now program in Virginia.
Dr. Chandler attended ophthalmology residency at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C. after an internal medicine internship at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He attended medical school at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (Medical College of Virginia) receiving an M.D. degree, and attended the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia, receiving a B.A. degree.
Dr. Chandler has been actively involved at his church in a volunteer capacity as well as serving on several committees over the years. He has worked to develop and update his church’s and the Richmond Eye Associates websites for over 15 years, and has been involved in sports photography for his church’s Upward Sports program for over 10 years.
