Glaucoma Risk Factor Screening Tests

Glaucoma is an eye disorder which leads gradually to a loss of vision, usually without symptoms. Certain people are at higher risk for glaucoma. This is related to age, race, family history, and other medical or eye conditions. This interactive glaucoma screening test asks about common risk factors for glaucoma, and then determines if a person would qualify for the Medicare Glaucoma Screening Benefit, or for the EyeCare America Glaucoma Project. The only way to determine whether or not glaucoma is present is by having a complete eye examination by an ophthalmologist.

Read this important information before proceeding further:

These sections are not intended to replace the professional examination and diagnosis by a physician, and they are presented here purely for informational purposes. The diagnosis of glaucoma is made only after evaluation by an ophthalmologist. It is possible that an individual could have many risk factors for glaucoma, and never develop glaucoma. Similarly, it is possible for someone with no risk factors for glaucoma to develop the disease. A misdiagnosed or improperly treated eye condition can result in a permanent loss of vision, or a permanent loss of function of the eye or visual system. In the case of any eye problem, seek medical attention promptly. This can include emergency room treatment, as well as treatment by a medical physician or eye care provider.

EyeCare America - Glaucoma EyeCare Program

This public service project encourages early detection and treatment of glaucoma by promoting awareness of glaucoma risk factors and providing access to care for individuals at increased risk. This online screening test will determine if you are eligible for a referral to a local ophthalmologist for a glaucoma eye exam. You can also call 1-800-391-3937 for a screening and a referral. If you have no insurance, you may qualify for an eye exam at no cost.

For more information, or to print out a page regarding this program, go to EyeCare America - Glaucoma EyeCare Program.

Medicare Glaucoma Screening Benefit

Starting in 2002, Medicare covers eye examinations to screen for glaucoma. This online screening test will determine if you are eligible for this service. The patient will still be responsible for copays and deductibles.

For more information about this benefit, go to Medicare Glaucoma Screening Benefit.
